TUESDAY RANT: WHY COLD CALLING SCRIPTS ARE DESTROYING YOUR BRAND’S CREDIBILITY

I have commented on this issue before, but after another ridiculous interruption today, I feel compelled to address the big companies and their sales trainers directly.

Let’s be entirely clear: your modern outbound sales methodology is repulsive. Not only is it ineffective, but I can assure you that neither I nor any of my close professional colleagues would ever do business with a company that employs these tactics.

Here is the exact playbook you are training your teams to execute, and why it completely tanks your conversion rate:

1. The Spoof Call: It begins with a masked or local spoofed number just to trick someone into answering. The relationship starts on a foundation of deception.

2. Fake Familiarity: A total stranger often sounding about 18 years old and reading rigidly from a script opens by using your first name with unearned, fake intimacy.

3. Zero Respect for Time: Without asking if you are in the middle of a trial, a client call, or a critical deadline, they launch into a long-winded, slow-paced monologue that takes forever to get to the point.

4. The Endless Name Repetition: They repeat your first name every third sentence like a parrot, attempting a psychological rapport trick that feels artificial and condescending.

5. The Unreasonable Pitch: They expect you to purchase high-ticket, expensive goods or services with zero prior relationship, trust, or context.

6. The Escalation Layer: Even on the off-chance you were interested in the core service, you aren’t talking to a decisionmaker. You are immediately told you will need to schedule further calls with multiple members of their “team” and wasting even more of your valuable billable hours.
It’s infuriating, inefficient, and fundamentally disrespectful of a prospect’s time.

To the sales trainers and Chief Revenue Officers reading this:

If your core growth strategy relies on spoofing numbers, forcing scripts, and burning high-value prospects with aggressive, fake familiarity, you aren’t building a sales pipeline. You are actively destroying your brand’s reputation among executive decision-makers who value directness, competence, and mutual respect.

Teach your teams how to research a prospect, respect their time, get straight to the point, and deliver actual value upfront.

End of rant. Back to work.
