CAN YOU REQUIRE AN AUTO DEALER TO DISCONNECT THE FACTORY TELEMATICS SYSTEM AT TIME OF DELIVERY?

You can ask the dealer to disconnect the factory telematics system, but nothing in U.S. or Florida law requires them to do it. Most will refuse.

Factory systems (OnStar, Ford Connected Vehicle, Toyota Safety Connect, Bluelink, etc.) are deeply integrated. Pulling the modem or antenna often triggers diagnostic codes, disables emergency calling or SOS features, and can create warranty issues. A few dealers have done it (some Nissan stores, and Subaru dealers in Massachusetts during the right-to-repair fight), but it remains rare and discretionary.

Florida Statute 316.2675 only limits who can remotely disable a vehicle. It does not force dealers to disable telematics at sale.

The practical route is software-level opt-out:

• Cancel the connected-services plan by calling the manufacturer with your VIN.File “Do Not Sell or Share” and similar privacy requests through the automaker’s portal (or use a service like Privacy4Cars).

• Turn off data-sharing options in the car’s settings and companion app. Even after cancellation, the modem may still transmit for emergencies, OTA updates, and recalls. True permanent shutdown requires physical disconnection, which dealers rarely perform.

Aftermarket GPS or starter-interrupt devices installed by the dealer are different. As owner you can remove them, but check the financing contract first—removal may violate the loan terms. Ask in writing before signing what (if anything) is installed and demand its removal as a condition of sale.

Best sequence:

1. Confirm and remove any aftermarket tracker before you sign.

2. Ask the dealer to deactivate factory connected services at delivery.

3. Immediately after delivery, cancel the subscription, submit privacy opt-outs, and disable data-sharing toggles.

4. If you still want the hardware disconnected, take it to an independent shop; expect possible error codes and warranty complications.
